I have had a rat 2 or rat 1 for a few years now. I work in an environment where my EDC pocket knives take a real beating. I have carried several pocket knives and so many have been letdowns, steel that's easy to sharpen but won't hold an edge long, handles that break, locking mechanisms that aren't sturdy enough etc. I had a SOG knife for a long time and learned that the AUS-8 steel was excellent for what I needed. It was durable, didn't gain any corrosion over the years I carried it and it held an edge for a long time, reducing my efforts in having to sharpen it. That knife eventually broke and to my dismay, I found the knife had more than doubled in price when I went to buy a new one. So the search was on for a new AUS 8 bladed edc work knife.
I found OKC after searching for an aus 8 pocket knife and found the price reasonable and thought "why not?" Well, I got the knife and have been carrying one ever since. It's well made, durable and the plain edge is easy to sharpen and the AUS-8 still holds its edge. I use a 30 degree blade angle to help keep my knife edge for longer. And while it takes a good bit of work to grind the aus8 to this profile, once it's there I rarely have to bust out the full kit to sharpen, just 15 to 20 mins with my middle step stones and usually 20 min with the fine stone and it's back to sharp enough to shave hair off my hand... Maybe need to do this once every couple of months. There are certainly steels that are easier to sharpen but they don't hold up long at all in my experience. And the aus8 has also dealt with all manners of abuse such as my using it as a pry bar on occasion when I just don't have another tool able to that job nearby. The handle holds up, the bearings have held up, the knife has simply not let me down.
My first OKC knife (rat2) I had to ditch at a checkpoint going into an air show, I had completely forgot I had it in my pocket as it's just habit to have it on me. The rat 2 was a bit large to be honest so I got a rat 1. With there was a rat 1.5 as the 1 is a bit small but it's completely functional. I've been carrying it and using it daily for at least 2 years now.
These aus8 steel OKC knives are absolutely great for their price. For a work knife, I'll probably only ever carry a rat 1 OKC knife.
